Job summary

Perfect Venue in San Francisco is seeking a Senior Backend Engineer to own backend features, APIs, and data models while sharing responsibility for cloud infrastructure. You’ll build reliable APIs, optimize queries, and ensure scalable, observable services in AWS with Terraform.

You will collaborate with product and frontend engineers, review code, and mentor teammates, helping the team ship customer-centric features with quality and speed.

Qualifications

• Experience independently delivering and maintaining backend features in a production web application.
• Strong proficiency in a backend language and web framework (Rails, Django, Laravel, Node.js, .NET) or comparable stack.
• Strong relational database and SQL skills, including data modeling, query performance and transactions.
• Experience designing APIs and handling asynchronous processing, integration failures, and retries.
• Hands-on experience deploying, troubleshooting, and operating applications on AWS or another cloud, including IAM, networking, and config.
• Experience reviewing infrastructure as code using Terraform or comparable tool.
• A practical approach to automated testing, safe releases, production debugging, and communicating tradeoffs.
• Experience mentoring other engineers and providing technical guidance.

Responsibilities

• Deliver customer-facing features from product discussion through release and iteration.
• Own backend features from design through implementation, testing, release, and maintenance.
• Build reliable APIs, integrations, and background processing for customer workflows.
• Improve database queries, application performance, and failure handling as the product grows.
• Collaborate with engineering lead to maintain AWS infrastructure and review Terraform changes.
• Investigate production incidents, improve monitoring and recovery procedures, and document operating needs.
• Collaborate with product and frontend engineers on practical solutions and mentor teammates.
