Job summary

Pearson is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to own end-to-end delivery of scalable backend systems, with a strong focus on cloud-native, AWS-based architectures and distributed processing.

You will collaborate with product and architecture teams across locations, drive modernization, reduce technical debt, and ensure production reliability, observability, and security. This role supports remote work and offers a competitive salary in the U.S.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field.
• 7+ years of professional software engineering experience focusing on backend systems.
• Proven track record as technical lead or senior engineer on cross-functional initiatives.
• Strong knowledge of distributed systems, scalability, and fault tolerance.
• Experience with AWS and cloud-native architectures.
• Experience with automated testing and CI/CD.
• Excellent communication and leadership skills.

Responsibilities

• Lead architecture, design, implementation, testing, deployment, and production support of complex software systems.
• Build scalable, reliable backend services, distributed systems, event-driven applications, and streaming solutions.
• Own major engineering initiatives from discovery through delivery, production rollout, and ongoing support.
• Balance new features with modernization, technical debt reduction, reliability improvements, and maintenance of existing systems.
• Mentor engineers and promote engineering best practices.
• Produce clear technical documentation and runbooks.
• Drive 24/7 production support and incident response.
