Syms Strategic Group, LLC is seeking a Data Platform Engineer to lead modernization of a healthcare data platform from MSSQL XML to a scalable AWS-based architecture. Remote work with a focus on delivering secure, scalable data solutions for VA stakeholders.

The role emphasizes hands-on AWS data services, SQL reporting capabilities, and collaboration with a C#/.NET team to ensure smooth data flows from EDI processing into the new data layer, with CI/CD and IaC practices shaping the stack.

Qualifications

8+ years of software or data engineering experience with a strong AWS focus.
Proven experience migrating cloud data platforms in production enterprise or healthcare environments.
Experience selecting AWS data services to meet reporting needs.
Experience delivering analytics solutions for non-technical users.
Strong hands-on AWS experience with S3, Athena, Glue, Aurora, DynamoDB, Redshift, OpenSearch, Lambda, IAM, and CloudWatch.
Strong SQL skills for relational queries over XML/JSON.
Experience with XML-heavy data stores and data transformations at scale.
Familiarity with BI tools (e.g., QuickSight) and AWS analytics services.
Git/GitHub proficient; CI/CD with AWS tools.
IaC experience (CDK, CloudFormation, Terraform).
Ability to communicate architecture decisions to non-technical stakeholders.
Experience translating business reporting requirements into data models.
Agile methodologies (Scrum/Kanban) and JIRA.

Responsibilities

Lead the next phase of the healthcare data platform modernization.
Evolve MSSQL XML object store toward a scalable, cloud-native AWS data architecture for SQL-based reports.
Evaluate and decide the right AWS data strategy for the platform.
Evaluate and recommend AWS-native storage/query architectures (S3+Athena, Aurora, DynamoDB, Redshift, OpenSearch).
Design and build the reporting layer enabling business users to run SQL queries against healthcare data.
Architect the migration path for XML object store data into AWS with optimal storage formats and partitioning.
Build and maintain AWS data catalog, schemas, and metadata management.
Optimize query performance and cost across AWS services.
Collaborate with stakeholders to translate reporting requirements into data models.
Coordinate with back-end C#/.Net for data flow from EDI processing into the new layer.
Implement CI/CD pipelines using AWS-native tooling and IaC practices.
Document architecture decisions and data dictionaries for technical and non-technical audiences.
