Syms Strategic Group (SSG) seeks a Senior Systems Engineer (AWS Data Engineer) to lead cloud modernization of healthcare data platforms. The role focuses on evolving an MSSQL/XML store to a scalable AWS architecture, enabling SQL-based reporting for business users.

Qualifications

• 8+ years’ experience in software or data engineering with a strong AWS focus.
• Proven experience architecting cloud data migrations in production environments.
• Track record selecting AWS data services to meet reporting needs.
• Experience delivering analytics solutions for non-technical users.
• Deep hands-on AWS experience across data services (S3, Athena, Glue, Aurora, DynamoDB, Redshift, OpenSearch, Lambda, IAM, CloudWatch).
• Strong SQL skills to design relational query layers over XML/JSON data.
• Experience with XML-heavy data stores and data transformation at scale.
• Ability to evaluate trade-offs and make architecture recommendations based on cost and performance.
• Familiarity with BI tooling (Athena, QuickSight, Redshift) or equivalents.
• Proficiency with Git/GitHub and CI/CD tooling (CodePipeline, CodeBuild, CodeDeploy).
• Infra as Code practice using CDK, CloudFormation, or Terraform.
• Strong communication of technical decisions to non-technical audiences.
• Experience gathering reporting requirements and translating to data models.

Responsibilities

• Lead the next phase of healthcare data platform modernization.
• Evolve MSSQL/XML object store toward a scalable AWS data architecture for SQL-based reporting.
• Evaluate and decide AWS data strategy for the platform.
• Recommend optimal AWS data storage and query architectures (S3+Athena, Aurora, DynamoDB, Redshift, OpenSearch) based on needs.
• Design and build reporting layers enabling business users to run SQL queries.
• Architect migration path of XML object store data into the AWS platform with proper organization.
• Build and maintain AWS data catalog, schemas, and metadata management.
• Optimize query performance and cost across AWS services.
• Collaborate with stakeholders to translate reporting requirements into durable data models.
• Coordinate with back-end C#/.Net engineers to ensure data flows from EDI to the new data layer.
• Implement CI/CD pipelines for data infrastructure using AWS-native tooling.
• Apply IaC using CDK, CloudFormation, or Terraform.
• Document architecture decisions, data flows, and data dictionaries clearly.
