Job summary

Syms Strategic Group (SSG) is seeking a Senior Systems Engineer focused on AWS data engineering for healthcare data modernization. Remote role with the Veterans Affairs department, full-time and requires Public Trust clearance readiness.

The candidate will design scalable AWS data architectures and lead migrations from MSSQL XML stores to AWS services to support business reporting. Ideal candidates have 8+ years in data engineering with AWS, strong SQL, and experience with BI/reporting tools.

Qualifications

• 8+ years’ experience in software or data engineering with a strong AWS focus.
• Proven experience architecting and executing cloud data platform migrations in production enterprise or healthcare environments.
• Track record of evaluating and selecting AWS data services to meet business reporting and query requirements.
• Experience delivering reporting or analytics solutions that serve non-technical business users.
• Strong SQL skills and relational query design over semi-structured data (XML, JSON).
• Experience with XML-heavy data stores – parsing, querying, transforming XML at scale.
• Familiarity with CI/CD practices and AWS-native tooling (CodePipeline, CodeBuild, CodeDeploy).
• HIPAA/compliance awareness in cloud data architecture.

Responsibilities

• Lead the next phase of healthcare data platform modernization.
• Implement cloud-native AWS data architecture for reporting and queries.
• Evaluate AWS data strategies and storage options (S3+Athena, Aurora, DynamoDB, Redshift, OpenSearch).
• Design and build reporting/query layer for non-technical users.
• Architect migration of XML object store data from MSSQL to AWS platform.
