Job summary

Syms Strategic Group (SSG) is seeking a Senior Systems Engineer specializing in AWS Data Engineering to advance a healthcare data platform modernization. The role focuses on migrating from MSSQL XML stores to cloud-native AWS data architecture and enabling secure, performant SQL reporting for business stakeholders.

Responsibilities include selecting AWS data services, building a robust data catalog, and optimizing cost and performance across services.

Qualifications

• 8+ years in software or data engineering with a strong AWS focus.
• Experience architecting and migrating cloud data platforms in production
• Experience selecting AWS data services to meet reporting needs
• Experience delivering analytics for non-technical users
• Hands-on AWS data services including S3, Athena, Glue, Aurora, DynamoDB, Redshift, OpenSearch
• Strong SQL skills for relational queries on XML/JSON data
• Experience with XML-heavy data stores and transformations
• Ability to evaluate AWS trade-offs based on cost and performance
• Familiarity with BI tooling like QuickSight or equivalent
• Proficient in Git/GitHub workflows

Responsibilities

• Lead healthcare data platform modernization efforts.
• Architect AWS-based data architecture and reporting layer for SQL queries.
• Define migration path for XML object store data into AWS platform.
• Build and maintain AWS data catalog, schemas, and metadata management.
• Optimize query performance and cost across AWS services.
• Collaborate with stakeholders to translate reporting needs into data models.
• Coordinate data pipelines with EDI processing and CI/CD pipelines.
• Apply IaC practices using CDK, CloudFormation, or Terraform.
