Job summary

Athena in Wilmington, NC is seeking an Assistant Controller to lead day-to-day accounting operations, including the monthly close, general ledger, and reconciliations, reporting to the Finance Director.

This role requires 10+ years in accounting, strong U.S. GAAP knowledge, and proven supervisory experience; CPA preferred. You will drive process improvements and coordinate audits with external advisors.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance or related field required.
• CPA certification strongly preferred.
• 10+ years of progressive accounting experience including GL and financial reporting.

Responsibilities

• Lead the monthly, quarterly and annual close, ensuring timely journal entries, reconciliations, and accruals.
• Oversee day-to-day general ledger activities, including reconciliations, accruals, prepaid expenses, fixed assets, intercompany transactions, and related accounts.
• Provide day-to-day leadership, coaching, and oversight to accounting team members.
• Maintain and strengthen accounting policies, documentation, and internal controls to safeguard assets and ensure accurate reporting.
• Coordinate and support external financial statement audits and tax compliance activities.
• Oversee intercompany accounting across multiple entities and ensure proper elimination entries.
• Identify and implement opportunities to streamline, standardize, and automate accounting processes.
• Collaborate with FP&A and other departments to investigate variances and ensure proper accounting treatment.
