Your Opportunity

Stantec is seeking an experienced Senior Archaeologist with 8 years of CRM field and project management experience in California to join our Environmental Services Cultural Resources Team. This full-time position provides opportunities to manage projects, oversee field teams, coordinate with clients and regulatory agencies, and mentor junior staff. The successful candidate will be responsible for leading all aspects of cultural resource investigations, including research, survey, excavation, monitoring, analysis, and reporting in compliance with CEQA, Section 106 of the NHPA, and other federal, state, and local regulations.

Our team supports a diverse range of projects, including: Statewide utility compliance programs; Emergency fire response projects; Hydroelectric relicensing studies; as well as CEQA and Section 106 compliance projects.

Your Responsibilities

1. Serve as a Project Manager and/or Principal Investigator for cultural resource investigations.
2. Lead and direct pedestrian surveys, testing, data recovery, construction monitoring, and mitigation efforts.
3. Develop research designs, work plans, and field methodologies for compliance-driven projects.
4. Coordinate with federal, state, and local agencies, tribal representatives, and clients to ensure regulatory compliance.
5. Mentor and supervise junior archaeologists in field methods, data collection, and technical writing.
6. Oversee artifact analysis, laboratory processing, and curation efforts as needed.
7. Prepare and review technical reports, site forms (DPR 523), treatment plans, and other regulatory documents.
8. Develop budgets, schedules, and scopes of work for cultural resource projects.
9. Ensure compliance with CEQA, NHPA (Section 106), ARPA, NAGPRA, and other applicable regulations.
10. Conduct quality control reviews of field documentation and reporting.
11. Engage in business development efforts, including proposal writing and client outreach.
12. Promote health and safety standards in all field and office operations.

Qualifications

General Qualifications

1. Must reside in Southern California and be available for regional travel.
2. Ability to conduct physically demanding fieldwork in remote areas and extreme weather conditions.
3. Exceptional technical writing skills for DPR forms, compliance reports, and research documents.
4. Strong leadership, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
5. Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
6. Proficiency with MS Word, Excel, and GIS-based tools for data collection and reporting.

Professional Qualifications

1. Master’s degree in Anthropology, Archaeology, or a related field (Required).
2. Registered Professional Archaeologist (RPA) certification (Preferred).
3. 8 years of CRM experience in California, including project management experience.
4. Demonstrated experience leading field crews in survey, excavation, monitoring, and artifact analysis.
5. Experience coordinating with agencies and tribal representatives in compliance with Section 106 and CEQA.
6. Strong familiarity with California prehistoric and historic-era material culture.
7. Proficiency in site recording and completion of DPR 523 forms.
8. Experience with GPS, GIS mapping, and digital data collection tools (e.g., Arrow, ArcGIS, Survey123).
9. Valid driver’s license with a good driving record.
10. Experience in utility sector projects and large-scale infrastructure development (preferred but not required).

Salary Range(s):

• $78,200 - $125,900 Min/Max Pay Range for postings located in CA (SF Area includes SF, SJS & WLC)

The final agreed upon compensation is based on individual education, qualifications, experience, and work location. At Stantec certain roles are bonus eligible.
