Job summary

Groundswell is a premier technology integrator delivering AI-enabled solutions to federal agencies. This client-facing, hands-on engineer role spans discovery through production, requiring collaboration with stakeholders and end users to determine when AI adds value and how to implement it robustly.

You will lead architecture decisions, build complete capabilities, and mentor engineering teams while working across client delivery, product development, and rapid proofs of concept.

Qualifications

• 7+ years building and shipping production software.
• At least 2 years of hands-on experience building applications that integrate large language models.
• Strong programming ability in Python/TypeScript/SQL with API integration.
• Lead requirements conversations with non-technical stakeholders and translate to technical plans.
• Proven ability to balance accuracy, cost, latency, and complexity.

Responsibilities

• Lead discovery with business and technical stakeholders to understand the workflow and decision criteria.
• Define measurable success criteria before building, including accuracy targets and acceptance conditions.
• Recommend against AI when a simpler solution suffices.
• Select the AI pattern appropriate to the problem (extraction, classification, retrieval, etc.).
• Architect workload placement considering quality, cost, latency, security, and authorization.
• Build end-to-end capability including prompts, retrieval, API integration, and UI.
• Develop evaluation sets and measure results, iterating on data-driven improvements.
• Determine readiness for deployment and operationalize capabilities in client environments.
• Provide clear documentation on solution scope, validation, and failure handling.
• Monitor quality, cost, latency, drift; optimize as needed.
• Mentor engineers and raise the team’s technical capability.
