Job summary

Groundswell seeks an experienced AI Engineer who can turn ambiguous business problems into practical AI solutions and know when not to use AI. This client-facing role covers discovery, design, build, demo, and production ownership across workflows, data handling, and interfaces.

You will collaborate with engineers, executives, and end users to define success criteria, build end-to-end capabilities, and ensure deployment readiness while balancing quality, cost, and latency in federal-grade

Qualifications

• 7+ years building and shipping production software.
• 2+ years building apps that integrate large language models, including prompt engineering and retrieval-augmented generation.
• Experience evaluating AI system quality with test sets and metrics.
• Strong programming in Python, TypeScript, or SQL with API integration.
• Proven ability to lead requirements conversations with non-technical stakeholders.
• Sound judgment on tradeoffs between accuracy, cost, latency, and complexity.
• Excellent written communication for client-facing docs.
• Ability to work with minimal direction in ambiguity.
• U.S. Citizenship required; ability to obtain security clearances.

Responsibilities

• Lead discovery with stakeholders to understand workflow, decision, and success criteria.
• Define measurable success criteria prior to building, including accuracy targets and acceptance conditions.
• Recommend against AI when a simpler solution is appropriate; propose alternatives.
• Select the AI pattern suited to the problem (extraction, classification, summarization, retrieval, or agentic).
• Define where workloads run considering quality, cost, latency, security, and authorization.
• Build end-to-end capability with prompts, retrieval design, APIs, data handling, and UI.
• Create evaluation sets and measure results against them.
• Determine when capability is ready for deployment and productionize.
• Governance, logging, and traceability in client environments.
• Produce client-facing documentation and design rationale.
• Monitor quality, cost, latency, and drift post-launch.
• Shape roadmap with working proof over презентаtion material.
• Mentor engineers; raise team judgment and patterns.
