Axle is seeking a Senior Data Scientist, AI Retrieval Systems to support NIH rare disease research. You will own the data layer, retrieval services, and interfaces, working with clinicians and researchers across NIH.

This senior IC role emphasizes ontology-driven data models, grounding language in clinical concepts, and building scalable, on-premises pipelines with Kubernetes and Next.js interfaces.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in data-related field; advanced degree preferred.
• 5+ years building/operating production software or data systems.
• 2+ years shipping LLM-powered applications.
• Experience end-to-end retrieval systems with indexing, query construction, and evaluation.
• Experience with structured output and tool or function calling.
• Ability to own a service end-to-end from design to deployment.

Responsabilités

• Model biomedical knowledge and ingest ontologies into PostgreSQL.
• Build retrieval-augmented services grounding language in clinical concepts.
• Tune keyword and vector search for large biomedical corpora.
• Develop ranking and domain-aware weighting for results.
• Deliver interfaces using Next.js, React, and TypeScript.
• Deploy on NIH on-premises and HPC Kubernetes environments.
• Build and run evaluation suites and logging for traceability.
• Collaborate with NIH clinicians and researchers and publish findings.
