Axle is a bioscience and IT company helping NIH and other research centers accelerate discoveries with advanced AI and data tooling. We seek a Senior Data Scientist, Agentic AI Systems, to design and deploy end-to-end AI workflows that converse with researchers, capture validated data, and feed robust searches and analyses.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Data Science, CS, Bioinformatics, Biomedical Informatics, or related field.
• At least 5 years building and operating production software or data systems; 2+ years shipping LLM-powered apps.
• Experience with structured output and tool calling, typed schemas and validation.
• Ability to own a service end to end and obtain Public Trust Security clearance.

Responsibilities

• Build agentic AI systems for rare disease research workflows with conversation logic and validation steps.
• Model outputs in Pydantic with typed schemas and tool calling; ensure traceability to source.
• Write, version, and regression test prompts and corresponding schemas.
• Build evaluation for tasks with no single right answer using golden sets and model-based graders.
• Keep multi-step LLM workflows responsive under load with async design and timeout handling.
• Log system activity: requests, latency, errors, and decision rationale for review.
