Job summary

Axle is seeking a Senior Data Scientist, Agentic AI Systems, to join our NIH-supported research team in a remote US position. You will lead end-to-end design and deployment of agentic AI workflows for rare disease research, ensuring rigor, traceability, and validated outputs.

You will collaborate with NIH staff, clinicians, and domain experts to define data models, evaluation strategies, and engineering standards for AI deployment in research settings.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Bioinformatics, Biomedical Informatics, or a related field.
• Advanced degree preferred; equivalent professional experience considered.
• At least 5 years building and operating production software or data systems.
• At least 2 years shipping LLM-powered applications (agents, retrieval, or evaluation).
• Experience with structured output and tool or function calling, shaping models to typed schemas.
• Experience evaluating systems with no single right answer using golden sets or model-based graders.

Responsibilities

• Build agentic AI systems for rare disease research workflows, including conversation logic and confirmation steps.
• Model outputs in Pydantic; use structured output and tool calling for typed, validated data.
• Write, version, and regression test prompts behind clinical and scientific reasoning tasks.
• Build evaluation for tasks with no single right answer; use golden sets and model-based graders.
