The Senior Accountant is a key member of the accounting team responsible for construction job cost accounting, financial reporting, month-end close, and other general accounting functions. This is a hands‑on position within a small accounting team and requires someone who is comfortable managing both detailed accounting responsibilities and higher‑level financial analysis. The ideal candidate will have strong accounting fundamentals, construction industry experience, and the ability and desire to take on increasing responsibility as they grow within the organization.
Key ResponsibilitiesAccounts Payable, Accounts Receivable & Billing
- Ensure timely and accurate vendor and subcontractor payments.
- Review transactions and supporting documentation for accuracy, proper authorization, and appropriate job cost coding.
- Monitor outstanding receivables and payables and assist with resolving discrepancies, payment issues, and collection matters.
- Prepare and/or review bank reconciliations, cash reporting, and daily cash activity.
Job Cost & Project Accounting
- Oversee and maintain accurate job cost accounting for active construction projects.
- Review project costs, commitments, billings, and financial activity for accuracy and appropriate classification.
- Work closely with project managers to ensure job cost information is complete, accurate, and timely.
- Support project closeout and final reconciliation of job costs.
General Ledger & Financial Reporting
- Assist with monthly and year‑end closing processes, including journal entries, account reconciliations, and financial statement preparation.
- Review general ledger activity and research unusual or inaccurate transactions.
- Help ensure consistent application of company accounting policies, procedures, and internal controls.
- Prepare and/or review bank reconciliations, cash reporting, and daily cash activity.
Tax, Audit & Compliance
- Assist with sales and use tax compliance and other applicable state and local tax reporting.
- Prepare schedules and supporting documentation for the company’s annual financial statement audit.
- Assist with maintaining appropriate accounting documentation, records, and controls.
- Support other regulatory, tax, insurance, or financial reporting requirements as needed.
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related field preferred; equivalent relevant experience will be considered.
- Five or more years of progressive accounting experience preferred, with construction or project‑based accounting experience strongly preferred.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Excel and experience working in accounting or ERP systems.
- Experience with construction accounting software is preferred
- Strong analytical, organizational, and problem‑solving skills with a high degree of accuracy and attention to detail.
- Ability to communicate effectively with accounting staff, project managers, vendors, and company leadership.
- Ability to manage multiple priorities and work both independently and collaboratively in a small‑team environment.
