The Senior Accounting Manager – Construction is responsible for overseeing the financial and accounting operations related to construction projects and contracts. This role ensures accurate financial reporting, project cost tracking, compliance with company policies and contract requirements, and supports operational leadership with financial analysis and forecasting. The position plays a key role in managing project accounting, work-in-progress reporting, budgeting, revenue recognition, and financial controls within a fast-paced construction environment.

The ideal candidate will possess strong construction accounting experience, leadership capabilities, and a detailed understanding of job costing, contract management, and financial compliance.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Oversee day-to-day accounting operations for construction projects and related business activities.
• Manage month-end and year-end close processes, including journal entries, accruals, reconciliations, and financial reporting.
• Prepare and review financial statements, project profitability reports, and management reports.
• Ensure accuracy of general ledger activity and project-related accounting transactions.

Construction Accounting

• Oversee job costing and project accounting functions for multiple projects and contracts.

Compliance & Internal Controls

• Ensure compliance with GAAP, company policies, and internal controls.
• Support internal and external audits, including preparation of requested documentation and schedules.
• Maintain compliance with federal, state, and local financial regulations.
• Assist with implementation and monitoring of accounting procedures and financial controls.
• Support payroll, tax reporting, and financial compliance activities as needed.

Leadership & Team Management

• Supervise and mentor accounting staff, including project accountants and accounting coordinators.
• Provide guidance, training, and performance management for assigned team members.
• Promote collaboration between finance, operations, and project management teams.
• Assist with process improvement initiatives and financial system enhancements.

Qualifications

Education

• Bachelor’s degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or related field required.
• CPA or CMA certification preferred.

Experience

• Minimum of 7–10 years of progressive accounting experience required.
• Minimum of 3–5 years of construction accounting experience required.
• Experience with government contracts, federal contracting, or multi-site operations preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Strong knowledge of construction accounting principles, job costing, and WIP reporting.
• Understanding of percentage-of-completion accounting and revenue recognition.
• Proficiency with ERP/accounting systems and Microsoft Excel.
• Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills.
• Ability to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
• Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
• Strong attention to detail and accuracy.

Preferred Qualifications

• Experience with Sage, Viewpoint, Deltek, or similar construction accounting software.
• Experience supporting federal contracts or Service Contract Act (SCA) environments.
• Advanced Excel and financial modeling skills.
• Experience with budgeting, forecasting, and strategic financial planning.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to sit for extended periods while working on a computer.
• Ability to occasionally lift up to 15 pounds.
• Ability to travel occasionally, if required.

This position operates primarily in an office or hybrid work environment and may occasionally visit construction or project sites.
