Job summary

Idaho National Laboratory is seeking an intern to support a DOE project on containerized modular substations. You will build and run finite-element models of substation modules, evaluating seismic, shock, and transport loading using SAP2000, ABAQUS, or INL’s MASTODON code.

The role reports to the Risk and Reliability Research team, with onsite work at the Idaho Falls Campus on a 9x80 schedule. Start date and duration vary by project; course credit may be available through your university.

Qualifications

• Enrolled full time in a Master or Doctorate program in civil, structural, mechanical, or earthquake engineering.
• Minimum GPA 3.0 overall.
• Resume/CV, unofficial transcripts, current schedule with credits.
• Coursework in structural dynamics, finite element analysis, and earthquake engineering.
• Experience with FEA tools (ABAQUS/ANSYS/SAP2000) and scripting (Python/MATLAB).

Responsibilities

• Build and run finite-element models of containerized substation modules using SAP2000, ABAQUS, and/or MASTODON/other FEA tools.
• Assess structural performance under seismic, shock, and transport loading.
• Summarize findings in technical slides and reports; participate in team meetings.
• Contribute to broader project documentation.
