Job summary

The New York Times is seeking an Engineering Manager for Cybersecurity to lead a security engineering team building and operating core security platforms and guardrails for the organization. You will balance people management with hands-on technical decision making and partnering across Cybersecurity, Developer Platforms, Enterprise Technology and Product Engineering.

You will mentor engineers, set roadmaps, drive secure-by-default models, improve vulnerability workflows, and help teams deliver

Qualifications

• 3–5+ years leading engineers as a people manager or tech lead in security or platform engineering.
• Hands-on security engineering or infrastructure experience; production workloads on AWS and/or GCP.
• Experience with CI/CD, infrastructure as code, and container orchestration.
• Strong knowledge of IAM, encryption, vulnerability management, and network security.
• Proven ability to hire, develop, and retain diverse engineers.
• Excellent communication to explain technical topics to non-specialists.

Responsibilities

• Lead and grow a Security Engineering team building core security platforms.
• Define vision and strategy for the Security Engineering function.
• Owner of roadmap to delivery for security services used by engineers.
• Foster context over control; empower teams with patterns and tooling.
• Collaborate with Dev Platforms, Enterprise Tech, and Product Engineering.
• Improve vulnerability intake, triage, remediation workflows and reporting.
• Mentor engineers and support meaningful career growth.
• Promote healthy, inclusive team culture and sustainable practices.
• Contribute to incident response, audit support, and cross-functional groups.
• Champion values supporting journalistic independence and NYT mission.
