Job summary

General Motors Company is seeking a Principal Security Software Engineer to define and lead Cyber Security strategy for complex programs and new technologies. You will provide technical leadership, mentor engineers, and drive secure software practices across GM's application ecosystem.

Responsibilities include designing security-focused components, integrating controls into CI/CD, cloud platforms, threat modeling, and incident response.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree or higher in CS, software engineering, cybersecurity, or related field (or equivalent practical experience).
• 7+ years of software engineering experience building and owning production systems.
• Proficiency in Python, Go, Java, or C++ with strong CS fundamentals.
• Experience using AI-assisted development tools in daily workflows.
• Experience with major cloud platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP) and IaC.
• Hands-on with Docker and Kubernetes.
• Solid understanding of security concepts: PKI, encryption, secrets management, and secure coding.
• Experience partnering with security and audit/compliance teams.
• Proven ability to plan and manage work in Agile environments.
• Strong written and verbal communication to explain security concepts.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and maintain security-focused software components, services, and tools across GM's application ecosystem.
• Develop automation frameworks and internal platforms for secure patterns (identity, auth, secrets management, logging).
• Integrate security controls into CI/CD pipelines, build systems, and cloud-native workflows.
• Architect and implement resilient, scalable security services and APIs (auth, policy evaluation, event ingestion).
• Collaborate with application, infrastructure, and platform teams to embed security requirements in designs.
• Perform secure code reviews, threat modeling, and design reviews to identify and remediate vulnerabilities.
• Build and maintain security telemetry: logging, metrics, and alerting for detection and incident response.
• Contribute to incident response and post-incident reviews as an engineering owner.
• Stay current with threats and translate them into engineering roadmaps.
• Provide mentorship on secure coding and architecture to other engineers.
