Job summary

General Motors is seeking a Principal Security Software Engineer to define and lead cyber security strategy for complex programs. You will provide technical leadership, build secure software components, and mentor engineers across GM’s application ecosystem.

You will design security controls for CI/CD, work with cloud platforms, containers, threat modeling, and incident response. This role is remote nationwide in the United States and offers relocation benefits per policy.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or higher in a relevant technical field or equivalent experience.
• 7+ years of software engineering experience building production systems.
• Proficient in at least one modern language (Python, Go, Java, or C++).
• Experience with AI-assisted development tools (GitHub Copilot, Cursor, etc.).
• Experience designing and operating services on AWS, Azure, or GCP; IaC exposure.
• Hands-on experience with containers and orchestration (Docker, Kubernetes).
• Strong understanding of core security concepts: PKI, encryption, secrets management, secure coding, input validation, and common vulnerability classes (injections, XSS, CSRF).
• Experience partnering with security and audit/compliance teams.

Responsibilities

• Design, build, and maintain security-focused software components and services across GM’s ecosystem.
• Develop automation frameworks and platforms to promote secure patterns and patterns adoption.
• Integrate security controls into CI/CD pipelines and cloud deployment workflows.
• Architect and implement scalable security services and APIs (authentication, authorization, policy evaluation).
• Collaborate with engineering teams to embed security requirements into designs.
• Perform secure code reviews, threat modeling, and post-incident reviews as an owner of security services.
• Provide mentorship on secure coding and security architecture.
