Distinguishing Features of Work

Minimum Age: 18 years

Hours of Work: Must be available for a minimum of 15 hours per week. The position requires working evenings, weekends, and some daytime hours. This is a year-round position.

Essential Functions:

• Provide internal and perimeter security for the main or branch library.
• Stand in assigned areas and patrol frequently on foot.
• Monitor and respond to disruptive and unauthorized activities, including noise, loitering, theft, and property destruction.
• Open and/or secure the facility at closing.
• Work under the direction of a supervisor in charge of the library.
• Perform related functions as assigned.
• Maintain regular and predictable attendance as scheduled.

Knowledge, Skills, and Physical Requirements:

• Demonstrate personal character, temperament, and judgment to respond effectively to incidents or report them appropriately.
• Strong verbal communication skills and a customer service orientation, with the ability to interact respectfully yet firmly with patrons, including children and teens.
• Ability to follow verbal and written instructions, learn tasks, and apply rules consistently.
• Ability to prepare written reports and maintain logs.
• Engage in frequent standing and patrolling on foot.

Experience and Training / Licensing Requirements:

• High school diploma or GED required.
• Prior security-related public contact experience preferred.
• Valid Michigan driver's license with a good driving record required.
• Bilingual ability is a plus.

Post-Offer Requirements:

• Satisfactory completion of criminal background check, physical exam, and drug screening (per Federal Drug-Free Workplace Act, excluding marijuana under Michigan law).
• Part-time employees are not eligible for city-provided health and welfare benefits.
