Job summary

The State of South Carolina Department of Corrections is hiring a security supervisor to plan, coordinate and direct the actions of the security staff within a medium/maximum security facility. You will oversee security for all buildings and public property, perform routine unit checks, assist with inmate counts, and investigate complaints, arbitrating disputes between inmates and staff.

Completion of required training is mandatory.

Qualifications

• A high school diploma and three years' experience in correctional, security, military, or police work, including one year of supervisory experience.
• A degree in criminal justice or a related degree may substitute for supervisory experience year for year (associate and above = 1 year).
• Must be certified by the SCDC Training Academy and complete the basic supervisory course within six months of entry.

Responsibilities

• Under general supervision, plans, coordinates and directs the actions of the security staff and oversees security, custody and control of inmates in a medium/maximum security facility.
• Assumes primary responsibility for security for all buildings and public property.
• Makes routine checks of the unit(s) to ensure subordinate staff are performing their duties properly and safely, and that cleanliness and OSHA standards are maintained.
• Assists with all inmate counts for accuracy.
• Investigates complaints and violations; arbitrates disputes among inmate population and correctional staff.
