Job summary

The South Carolina Department of Corrections is seeking a supervising security professional to plan, coordinate, and direct the security staff within a medium‑security facility.

You will oversee security, custody and control of inmates, and perform routine unit checks to ensure safety and OSHA standards are met. Certification through the SCDC Training Academy is required within six months of start.

Qualifications

• Must successfully complete eight (8) weeks of SCDC Basic Training upon hire.
• A high school diploma and relevant experience. A bachelor's degree in a related field may substitute for the required experience.
• A high school diploma and three (3) years experience in correctional, security, military, or police work to include one (1) year of supervisory experience.
• Must be certified by the SCDC Training Academy and successfully complete the basic supervisory course within six (6) months of entry into the position.

Responsibilities

• Plans, coordinates and directs the actions of the security staff and oversees security, custody and control of inmates in a medium-security facility.
• Assumes primary responsibility for security of all buildings and public property.
• Makes routine checks of the unit(s) to ensure subordinate staff are performing their duties properly and safely, and that cleanliness and OSHA standards are maintained.
• Assists with all inmates counts for accuracy.
• Investigates complaints and violations; arbitrates disputes among inmate population and correctional staff.
