Job summary

State of South Carolina Department of Corrections is seeking a Security Supervisor for a minimum-security facility. Under general supervision, you will plan, coordinate and direct the security staff and oversee security, custody and control of inmates.

You will conduct routine unit checks, assist with inmate counts, investigate complaints and arbitrate disputes, and serve as shift captain in the supervisor's absence. Eight weeks of SCDC Basic Training are required after hire.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent; related experience required.
• 3 years’ experience in correctional, security, military, or police work; supervisory experience required.
• A degree in criminal justice or related field may substitute for supervisory experience year for year (associate and above = 1 year).
• Must be certified by the SCDC Training Academy and complete the basic supervisory course within six months of entry.

Responsibilities

• Plans, coordinates and directs the actions of the security staff.
• Oversees security, custody and control of inmates in a minimum-security facility.
• Assumes primary responsibility for security of all buildings and public property.
• Makes routine unit checks to ensure staff perform duties properly and OSHA standards are met.
• Investigates complaints and disputes; arbitrate inmate-staff issues.
• Acts as shift captain in the supervisor's absence.
