Job summary

South Carolina Department of Corrections seeks a Security Supervisor to plan, coordinate and direct the actions of the security staff and oversee security, custody and control of inmates in assigned unit(s) of a medium/maximum security facility.

You will supervise subordinate staff, conduct routine unit checks, assist with inmate counts, investigate complaints and arbitrate disputes, and ensure OSHA standards are maintained. Successful completion of eight weeks SCDC Basic Training is required.

Qualifications

• High school diploma and three years’ experience in correctional, security, military, or police work to include one year of supervisory experience.
• A degree in criminal Justice or a related degree may substitute for supervisory experience year for year (associate and above = 1 year).
• Must be certified by the SCDC training academy and successfully complete the basic supervisory course within six (6) months of entry into the position.

Responsibilities

• Plans, coordinates and directs the actions of the security staff and oversees security, custody and control of inmates in assigned unit(s) of a medium/maximum security facility.
• Assumes primary responsibility for security of all buildings and public property.
• Makes routine checks of the unit(s) to ensure subordinate staff are performing their duties properly and safely, and that cleanliness and OSHA standards are maintained.
• Assists with all inmates counts for accuracy.
• Investigates complaints and violations; arbitrates disputes among inmate population and correctional staff.
