Job summary

Newark Board of Education in Newark, NJ invites qualified applicants for the Custodian Day position across multiple school sites, including Newark School of Fashion & Design and Wilson Avenue School. This role is governed by the New Jersey Civil Service Commission and will start as a provisional appointment pending examination.

The successful candidate will supervise custodial staff, plan and inspect cleaning, maintain facilities, operate heating and ventilation systems, and manage supplies.

Qualifications

• High School diploma or equivalent.
• Two years of experience in heating, cleaning, and maintenance of buildings and grounds.
• Current Black Seal Boiler Operator License issued by the NJ Department of Labor and Workforce Development.
• Driver's license required in NJ only if vehicle operation is necessary to perform duties.

Responsibilities

• Inspects, analyzes, and determines cleaning work and materials needed.
• Establishes work plans for subordinates and supervises cleaning, maintenance, and care of buildings and grounds.
• Supervises cleaning of desks, chairs, rugs, lighting, windows, and other furniture and fixtures.
• Supervises floor care: sweeping, washing, sanding, waxing, and polishing of various floors.
• Oversees application of cleaners and paint removers to furniture and fixtures.
• Supervises reconditioning and maintenance of grounds and parking areas.
• Operates heating and ventilating equipment and supervises elevator operators.
• Inspects facilities to note conditions and coordinates repairs.
• Maintains records of personnel, equipment, materials, and time spent; reports repairs to authorities.
