Job summary

The Newark Board of Education seeks a Custodian Night to join its team at Chancellor Avenue School, Grover Cleveland Elementary, Michelle Obama Elementary, Nelson Mandela Elementary, Newark School of Architecture & Interior Design, and N.J. Regional Day.

The role is governed by the NJ Civil Service Commission and arrivals are provisional until a written exam is completed. Open to qualified applicants who will be ranked on the Civil Service test to become permanent through subsequent steps.

Qualifications

• Graduation from High School or Vocational School or possession of an approved High School Equivalent Certificate.
• Two (2) years of custodial experience involving heating, cleaning, maintenance of furnishings, and grounds.
• Current, valid Black Seal Boiler Operator License (high or low pressure) issued by NJDOL/Workforce Development.
• Driver's license valid in New Jersey if vehicle operation is necessary for duties.

Responsibilities

• Inspects, analyzes, and plans cleaning work and materials.
• Establishes and develops effective work plans for subordinates.
• Supervises cleaning, maintenance and care of buildings and grounds.
• Supervises cleaning and maintenance of desks, chairs, rugs, lighting, windows and fixtures.
• Oversees floors, waxing and polishing of various floor types.
• Oversees use of cleaning agents for furniture and surfaces.
• Oversees grounds and parking area upkeep and reconditioning.
• Manages heating/ventilation equipment operation.
• Supervises elevator operators and overall site safety.
