Job Description

The Spartan Campus Employee supports an assigned University department by performing administrative, customer-service, operational, program, and project-based duties. Under the supervision of a designated faculty or staff member, the student assists with daily departmental functions while planning and completing assigned projects that support departmental goals.

Responsibilities may include assisting students and visitors, responding to telephone calls and emails, maintaining records, supporting programs and events, conducting research, organizing project materials, monitoring deadlines, providing progress updates, and preparing final reports, presentations, or other deliverables. The employee must maintain confidentiality, demonstrate professionalism and dependability, follow University policies, and complete assignments within established timelines.

Through this work-based learning experience, the student applies classroom knowledge in a professional environment while developing career-readiness skills in communication, teamwork, critical thinking, technology, leadership, time management, problem-solving, and project management. Specific responsibilities will vary according to the needs of the assigned department.

Project Responsibilities

Minimum qualifications

Must be currently full-time enrolled at Norfolk State University.

  • Must maintain satisfactory academic progress and good standing with the University.
  • Must meet the minimum GPA requirement established by the employing department or program.
  • Must be eligible to work in the United States and complete all required employment documentation.
  • Must demonstrate professionalism, dependability, and punctuality.
  • Must possess effective communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Must be able to follow instructions and work independently or as part of a team.
  • Must be available to work the assigned schedule without interfering with classes.
  • Must comply with all Norfolk State University policies and workplace expectations.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous employment, volunteer, leadership, or campus involvement experience.
  • Strong communication, customer-service, and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, email, and other basic computer applications.

  • Availability to work during the department’s preferred hours, including occasional evenings or weekends.

Wage employees are paid an hourly rate for actual hours worked and are limited to working 1500 hours per year and can only work a maximum of 29 hours a week. Work hours must be counted on the basis of the twelve-month period beginning May 1 of each year and April 30 of the following year. Wage employees in all agencies (all branches of government) are limited to working no more than 1500 hours during each twelve-month period of May 1-April 30. Should you work 1500 hours prior to April 30, your services will be terminated immediately. You will not be eligible for employment again until May 1. It is the responsibility of the employee and supervisor, as well as the Office of Human Resources, to monitor these hours to ensure compliance to policy. Wage employees may not earn leave or do they have access to the Grievance Procedure process. They are not covered by the provision of the Virginia Personnel Act and are not entitled to the benefits afforded employees occupying classified positions.
