Job summary

Builders FirstSource in Rapid City, SD, seeks a Trainee to develop industry knowledge and advance into an Outside Sales Representative role. You’ll rotate through departments, accompany active reps on calls, and take on inside sales duties while learning sales techniques.

The program emphasizes customer service, administrative tasks, and safety compliance, with a pathway to OSR in about 90–180 days. High school diploma required; a related bachelor’s degree is a plus.

Qualifications

• High School or GED required; Bachelor’s Degree in Sales/Marketing or related field preferred.
• 0-2 years related industry operations/sales experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Strong customer service skills, both in-person and by phone.
• Good math aptitude and numerical reasoning.
• Strong verbal and written communication skills.
• Solid interpersonal skills, including tact and influencing, with internal and external contacts.
• Good computer aptitude, including Microsoft Office and ERP applications.

Responsibilities

• Learn and perform duties across yard operations, production, dispatch/scheduling, and inside sales while preparing for outside sales responsibilities.
• Shadow Outside Sales Reps or Sales Manager to learn sales techniques and customer engagement.
• Handle inside sales tasks: answering calls, taking orders, and related duties.
• Support Outside Sales with take-offs, order processing, signatures, and sales calls to new/existing customers.
• Set personal performance goals and monitor progress with managers and trainers.
• Participate in sales training programs and adhere to safety procedures.
• Perform other duties as assigned.
