Job description

The Axel Group is seeking a Safety Manager for our client! They are a well-established General Contractor/Construction Management firm that has been in business for 100 years. They have a pipeline of projects ranging from healthcare and education to sports and recreation, commercial, and more. They are actively expanding into newer markets in the Tristate area.

About the Role

The Safety Manager is responsible for implementing and maintaining the organization’s safety programs and policies to promote a healthy, safe, and accident-free work environment. Serving as the on-site safety authority, this role interprets and enforces safety requirements while working collaboratively with field supervision, employees, subcontractors, and other project stakeholders to identify and correct safety issues with minimal disruption to operations.

The Safety Manager reports to the Director of Field Operations and is expected to exercise sound judgment regarding issues that require escalation.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist with the development, review, implementation, and ongoing improvement of company-wide and project-specific safety programs and policies.
  • Conduct on-site safety inspections and assessments of construction activities, work practices, and site conditions.
  • Assist with establishing, reviewing, and implementing infectious disease control plans in coordination with facility stakeholders.
  • Identify safety violations and implement appropriate corrective actions, including verbal and written warnings when warranted.
  • Verify that identified safety deficiencies are corrected in a timely manner.
  • Conduct safety orientations for new employees, subcontractors, and other individuals working on site.
  • Perform task-specific risk assessments and assist with developing safe work plans and procedures.
  • Review and provide guidance regarding site safety accommodations, equipment, signage, postings, and related requirements.
  • Verify compliance by employees and subcontractors with applicable safety policies and requirements, including toolbox talks, safety plans, lift plans, Safety Data Sheets (SDS), and personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Complete and investigate accident and incident reports.
  • Verify that responsible personnel have appropriate training for the tasks they perform or supervise.
  • Accompany OSHA representatives during site inspections when possible and serve as the project liaison with OSHA as appropriate.
  • Participate in project and job meetings as needed.
  • Maintain accurate records of safety inspections, reports, training, incidents, and corrective actions.
  • Assist with safety education and training for employees and project personnel.
  • Participate as a member of the company Safety Committee.
  • Provide safety-related input during bidding and preconstruction phases of projects.
  • Maintain required safety certifications and professional training.
  • Assist with meeting applicable requirements established by insurance providers.
  • Stay current on applicable safety regulations, industry practices, and emerging safety technologies.
  • Evaluate and adopt appropriate technology and tools to improve safety processes and operational efficiency.

This is a field-based construction safety position requiring regular presence on active job sites. The Safety Manager must be comfortable working around construction activities, interacting with multiple project stakeholders, and enforcing safety requirements in a professional and collaborative manner.
