Job summary

GitLab is hiring a Backend Engineer for the Knowledge Graph on the Orbit team. You will build and operate a Rust-based graph data service supporting analytics across GitLab deployments. You’ll work with MCP endpoints, data platforms, and AI-enhanced workflows.

You’ll own components, improve tests and runbooks, and collaborate across product, data, and security teams to ensure reliability and scalability of analytical workloads.

Qualifications

• Backend experience in production systems focused on reliability and maintainability.
• Proficiency in at least one modern backend language with interest in Rust.
• Exposure to distributed data or analytics systems (OLAP, Kafka/NATS).
• Interest in graph data modeling and query patterns.

Responsibilities

• Implement and iterate on backend features in the Knowledge Graph service.
• Maintain integrations with the rest of the GitLab platform.
• Contribute to system design discussions focusing on reliability and scalability.
• Improve observability, metrics, and runbooks; participate in on-call rotation.
• Collaborate with product, data, infrastructure, security, and AI teams.
