GitLab is seeking an Intermediate Backend Engineer for the Orbit team to build and operate a Rust-first Knowledge Graph service that supports GitLab Duo agents and analytics across deployments. You will work on data pipelines, API endpoints, and reliability-focused features in a highly autonomous, all-remote environment.

You’ll collaborate with teams across data, AI, and infrastructure, participate in design reviews, and progressively own components.

Competenze

• Backend experience emphasizing reliability and maintainability
• Proficiency in at least one modern backend language with strong Rust interest
• Exposure to distributed data or analytics systems (OLAP, Kafka/NATS, CDC)
• Interest in graph data modeling and queries (property graphs, multi-hop traversals)
• Experience using AI tools in development and validating outputs
• Ability to quickly pick up new languages/frameworks (Ruby, Go, TypeScript/Vue) as needed
• Strong system design fundamentals and clear written communication across time zones

Mansioni

• Implement backend features in Rust Knowledge Graph service with API endpoints
• Maintain integrations between Knowledge Graph and GitLab platform components
• Contribute to design discussions focused on reliability and scalability
• Improve operational maturity with metrics, logging, runbooks, alerts, on-call readiness
• Collaborate with product, data, infrastructure, security, and AI teams
• Participate in code reviews and knowledge-sharing to uphold standards
• Occasionally contribute Ruby work for Rails integration and UI plumbing
