Job summary

Shift5 is seeking a mission-aligned Mechanical Engineer to drive rugged hardware design for data collection on edge platforms. You will own the full hardware lifecycle, from concept through field deployment, collaborating with aerospace/defense teams and customers alike.

The role blends mechanical design, lifecycle management, and compliance, requiring hands-on field work, travel, and deep knowledge of MIL-STD-810/DO-160 standards to ensure rugged, reliable systems.

Qualifications

• 3+ years in mechanical engineering of rugged hardware enclosures.
• Proficient in 3D CAD and PLM tools (SolidWorks, NX, Teamcenter).
• Strong fundamentals: FEA, sheet metal, and environmental testing methods (MIL-STD-810/DO-160).
• Hands-on prototyping, assembly, integration, and testing.

Responsibilities

• Design rugged electronic enclosures and installation kits compliant with MIL-STD-810/DO-160.
• Own CAD modeling, GD&T, and PLM for assemblies.
• Collaborate with vendors for tooling, BOMs, and revisions.
• Travel to field sites for fit checks and integration testing.
• Prototype, test, and validate mechanical designs against specs.
• Translate field feedback into design improvements.
