Job summary

The South Carolina Department of Transportation is seeking a maintenance crew member to perform a wide range of road and bridge upkeep under supervision. Responsibilities include operating dump trucks and flatbeds, using small equipment, clearing rights-of-way, sign installation, vegetation management, drainage work, pothole patches, and paving driveways.

The role involves traffic control to protect workers and the public.

Responsibilities

• Under direct supervision, assists in the performance of a wide variety of maintenance activities in the construction, repair, and preservation of roads and bridges on the state highway system.
• Operates 5-yard standard dump truck and flatbed truck for hauling materials such as asphalt, limestone, dirt, soil, cement, pipe, construction materials, and debris.
• Operates small equipment such as brush chipper, rollers, broom sweepers, and pipe washers during highway and bridge maintenance tasks.
• Performs duties using manual labor for rights-of-way clearance, installing and maintaining signs, vegetation management, drainage work, pothole patching, and paving driveways.
• Flags traffic to protect workers and the public, removes debris, and assists in operating heavier equipment as needed.
• Conducts pre-trip equipment/vehicle inspections and supports emergency or inclement weather operations.
• May be available for extended hours or shifts and other related duties.
