Job summary

The South Carolina Department of Transportation is seeking a skilled equipment operator to perform roadway maintenance tasks and operate tandem dump trucks and other medium equipment. The role includes manual labor for pothole repairs, patching, paving, drainage work, and traffic control to ensure safety.

Applicants must have at least six months of related work experience, a valid driver’s license, and must obtain a Class A CDL within six months of placement.

Qualifications

• Six (6) months of related work experience or approved acceptable equivalence.
• A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required.
• Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) must be attained within six (6) months of placement.

Responsibilities

• Operates tandem dump trucks for hauling materials (asphalt, limestone, dirt, soil, cement, pipe, debris).
• Operates other medium equipment: belt loader, large roller, skid steer loader.
• Performs manual labor for roadway maintenance tasks (litter control, potholes, base repairs, patching, paving, drainage, shoulder work).
• Assists in grading and leveling to ensure proper drainage; uses tools like chainsaws and electric/gas-powered devices.
• Flags traffic to protect workers and the public; performs pre-operation maintenance and responds to emergencies and inclement weather.
