Job summary

The State of South Carolina Department of Transportation seeks a skilled maintenance equipment operator to perform road maintenance and operate tandem dump trucks, skid steers, and other heavy equipment. Qualifications

• Six (6) months of related work experience or an approved acceptable equivalence.
• A valid motor vehicle operator’s license is required.
• Requires attainment of a Class A CDL within six (6) months of placement.

Responsibilities

• Operate and maintain medium duty equipment such as tandem dump trucks, skid steer, self-propelled belt loader and tractor with large mower.
• Perform road maintenance tasks including clearing right‑of‑ways, cleaning drainage ditches, repairing shoulders, patching potholes, making base repairs, repairing bridges, paving driveways and laying sideline/crossline pipe.
• Operate 5 to 10 yard dump trucks for hauling materials such as asphalt, limestone, dirt, soil, cement, pipe and debris.
• Flag traffic during road repairs to protect workers and the motoring public.
• Assist in emergencies and inclement weather operations; may require hours outside normal schedule; on-call status 24 hours a day.
• Assist in operating backhoe, excavator, motor grader, slope mower, spreader, tractor with ditcher and front‑end loader.
• Operate and maintain electric/gas tools including chainsaws and pole saws; use hand tools in roadway maintenance.
