Job summary

Virginia Department of Transportation seeks a dependable equipment operator to perform roadway maintenance, emergency operations, and manual labor tasks. You will operate light to heavy highway equipment, conduct preventive maintenance, and apply MUTCD guidelines to detours and work zones.

You will join a safety-focused crew, required to read and follow plans, cooperate with team members, and ensure a safe, efficient worksite in accordance with OSHA/VOSHA standards.

Qualifications

• Effective oral and written communication.
• Ability to obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months and maintain thereafter.
• Ability to perform heavy manual labor.
• Ability to read and follow oral and written instructions.
• Knowledge of highway maintenance equipment, materials, methods, and procedures.
• Safety shoes required.
• Skill in the operation and maintenance of hand and power tools.
• Skill in the operation and maintenance of light, medium, and heavy duty equipment used for highway maintenance and repair.
• Knowledge of work zone traffic control standards and MUTCD.

Responsibilities

• Emergency Operations: Operate and maintain light and medium-duty equipment to perform maintenance and construction tasks.
• Emergency Operations: Prepare and operate equipment for snow and ice removal; provide traffic control.
• Equipment Operations: Operate and maintain light, medium and heavy-duty highway equipment.
• Job Safety: Follow safety rules, use PPE, and apply MUTCD for detours and work zones.
• Manual Labor: Work with crew to complete projects and maintenance tasks.
• Manual Labor: Use hand and power tools to complete assigned tasks.
• Preventive Maintenance: Perform maintenance, repair, and pre-trip inspections on equipment.
• Traffic Control Devices: Install, maintain and remove traffic control devices for work zones.
