Job summary

Commonwealth of VA Careers is seeking personnel for roadway maintenance in Virginia. The role involves operating light to heavy highway equipment, performing preventive maintenance, and assisting in emergency snow removal and roadcleaning efforts.

You will protect work zones, follow MUTCD guidelines, and collaborate with a crew to complete assigned maintenance projects. Candidates should be able to read and follow plans, possess strong communication skills, and be willing to obtain a CDL and DOT

Qualifications

• Effective communication both orally and in writing.
• CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter.
• Ability to perform heavy manual labor.
• Read and follow oral and written instructions.
• Knowledge of highway maintenance equipment, materials, methods, and procedures.
• Safety shoes required.
• Skill in the operation and maintenance of hand and power tools.
• Skill in the operation and maintenance of light, medium, and heavy duty equipment used for highway maintenance and repair.

Responsibilities

• Emergency Operations: Operate and maintain light and medium-duty equipment to perform maintenance and construction tasks.
• Emergency Operations: Prepare and operate equipment for snow and ice removal or other emergency operations; clear roadways and provide traffic control.
• Equipment Operations: Operate and maintain highway equipment and vehicles for maintenance and construction tasks.
• Job Safety: Apply safe work practices, protect work zones, wear PPE, and follow OSHA/VOSH regulations; use MUTCD for detours and lane closures.
• Manual Labor: Participate as a crew member to complete projects, perform manual labor and use hand/power tools as needed.
• Preventive Maintenance: Perform repairs and preventive maintenance, complete pre-trip inspections.
