Job summary

Virginia Department of Transportation is seeking a skilled maintenance worker to perform equipment operations, preventive maintenance, and manual labor for roadway upkeep in Virginia. The role includes emergency road service and traffic control duties in work zones.

Applicants should be able to obtain CDL and DOT medical clearance within 11 months, follow MUTCD standards, and work safely with hand and power tools. A combination of training or experience in maintenance is desirable.

Qualifications

• Ability to communicate clearly verbally and in writing.
• Ability to read and follow written instructions and work plans.
• Must be able to obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment.
• Experience with highway maintenance equipment, materials, methods and procedures.
• Safety shoes are required.
• Proficient in operating hand and power tools.
• Knowledge of MUTCD and work zone safety practices.

Responsibilities

• Operate light, medium and heavy highway equipment for maintenance and construction tasks.
• Perform preventive maintenance and minor repairs on vehicles and equipment.
• Conduct pre-trip inspections and ensure safety protocols on site.
• Install, maintain, and remove traffic control devices in work zones per MUTCD.
• Communicate effectively and document daily work activities.
• Assist crew to complete projects and meet objectives.
