Virginia Department of Transportation is seeking a hardworking maintenance worker to perform a mix of equipment operation, preventive maintenance, and manual labor on roadways.

This role requires adherence to safety rules, ability to read plans and follow instructions, and readiness to obtain a CDL/DOT medical card within 11 months. The position involves emergency road operations and active teamwork.

Qualifications

• Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
• Ability to obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter.
• Ability to perform heavy manual labor.
• Ability to read and follow oral and written instructions.
• Knowledge of highway maintenance equipment, materials, methods, and procedures.
• Safety shoes required.
• Skill in the operation and maintenance of hand and power tools.
• Skill in the operation and maintenance of light, medium, and heavy duty equipment used for highway maintenance and repair.

Responsibilities

• Emergency Operations: Operate and maintain light and medium-duty equipment to perform maintenance and construction tasks.
• Emergency Operations: Prepare and operate equipment for snow/ice removal and other emergencies, clear roadways, and provide traffic control.
• Equipment Operations: Operate and maintain highway equipment to perform maintenance and construction tasks.
• Job Safety: Ensure proper work site protection, identify hazards, wear PPE, and follow safety regulations (OSHA/VOSHA).
• Manual Labor: Work with crew to complete projects and perform maintenance tasks with hand/power tools.
• Preventative Maintenance: Perform repairs and inspections; complete pre-trip checks for operated vehicles/equipment.
• Traffic Control: Install, maintain, and remove traffic control devices in work zones using MUTCD guidelines.
