Job summary

The Virginia Department of Transportation is seeking a versatile worker to perform a mix of equipment operations, preventive maintenance, and manual labor in roadway maintenance. This role supports emergency roadway operations as an essential employee.

You will operate light to heavy highway equipment, perform pre-trip inspections, maintain safety practices, and apply MUTCD standards for detours and work zones.

Qualifications

• Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
• Ability to obtain CDL and DOT medical card within 11 months of employment and maintain thereafter.
• Ability to perform heavy manual labor.
• Knowledge of highway maintenance equipment, materials, methods, and procedures.
• Safety shoes required.
• Skill in the operation and maintenance of hand and power tools.
• Skill in the operation and maintenance of light, medium, and heavy duty equipment used for highway maintenance and repair.

Responsibilities

• Operate and maintain light and medium-duty highway equipment to perform maintenance tasks.
• Prepare equipment for snow/ice removal and emergency operations; clear roadways and provide traffic control.
• Apply MUTCD standards for detours, lane closures, and work zones; maintain a safe work environment.
• Identify hazards, ensure PPE usage, and follow safety regulations (OSHA/VOSHA).
• Participate as a working member of the crew to complete projects and objectives using hand and power tools.
