Job summary

VDOT is seeking a skilled maintenance worker to perform equipment operation, preventive maintenance, and manual labor in roadway maintenance. This essential role handles emergency roadway operations and supports detours, lane closures, and work zones according to MUTCD.

The position requires ability to read and follow work plans, maintain safety standards, wear PPE, and operate a range of highway equipment. CDL and DOT medical card are required; safety shoes are needed.

Qualifications

• Ability to communicate effectively orally and in writing.
• Ability to perform heavy manual labor.
• Ability to read and follow oral and written instructions.
• Knowledge of highway maintenance equipment, materials, methods, and procedures.
• Possession of CDL and DOT medical card and ability to maintain thereafter.
• Safety shoes required.
• Skill in the operation and maintenance of hand and power tools.
• Skill in the operation and maintenance of light, medium, and heavy-duty equipment used for highway maintenance and repair.

Responsibilities

• Emergency Operations: Clear roadways of snow, ice, and debris, and provide traffic control.
• Equipment Operations: Operate and maintain highway equipment for maintenance work.
• Job Safety: Follow safety regulations, wear PPE, and ensure work site protection.
• Manual Labor: Participate as a working crew member performing maintenance tasks.
• Preventative Maintenance: Perform maintenance, repairs, and pre-trip inspections.
• Traffic Control Devices: Install and maintain devices for work zones and detours.
