Job summary

The New York State Department of Transportation seeks a Motor Vehicle Inspector to conduct roadside safety inspections of commercial vehicles, perform post-accident inspections, and testify at hearings when required. You will enforce regulations, maintain records, and travel within a designated geographic area.

The role requires a valid NYS driver’s license, ability to travel frequently, and the capacity to work with limited supervision while coordinating with a supervisor for workload.

Qualifications

• Valid New York State driver’s license at appointment and continuous thereafter.
• Three years of experience in repair and/or mechanical inspection of buses (15+ passengers) and/or heavy-duty trucks (GVWR 18,000+ lbs) with one year experience in ABS.
• Alternative: associate’s degree plus one year of experience as described above.
• Alternative: one-year post-secondary certificate in automotive/diesel repair plus two years of experience as described above.

Responsibilities

• Conduct roadside safety inspections of buses, heavy-duty trucks, trailers, cargo tanks, vans, and other commercial vehicles.
• Perform post-accidents inspections and testify at hearings when required; maintain inspection records and reports.
• Enforce driver, vehicle and hazardous materials regulations.
• Work independently with scheduling managed by you; occasional night work and overnight travel.
• Travel within an assigned geographic area; operate a motor vehicle and meet transportation needs.
