Job summary

SoftPath Medical in Macon, GA seeks registered nurses (RN) and licensed practical nurses (LPN) for inpatient rehabilitation/medical-surgical care. Responsibilities include caring for neurological patients, wound care, IV therapy, ostomy/PEG management, tracheostomy care with respiratory support, and braces/splints.

Requires NIHSS and BLS certifications, active RN license, and 2+ years in rehab or Med-Surg. Floating between Unit 1 and Unit 2.

Qualifications

• Active RN license valid in the state of practice is required.
• BLS and NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certifications are required.
• Experience in Inpatient Rehabilitation or Medical-Surgical nursing is mandatory.

Responsibilities

• Care for neurological and rehab patients including post-craniotomy, CVA, brain injuries.
• Manage wounds, wounds vacs, drains, and ostomy/PEG care as needed.
• Assist with braces, splints, and mobility strategies.
• Provide tracheostomy care with respiratory therapy support.
• Coordinate with CNA staff and unit support to ensure patient comfort and safety.

About the Facility

Situated about 5-6 miles from the main hospital

Unit Details

Number of beds: 25

Patient census: 20-25

Minimum required experience: 2 years in Inpatient Rehabilitation or Medical-Surgical nursing; familiarity with inpatient rehab is essential

RN positions open to both RN and LPN applicants

First-time travel nurses are encouraged to apply

Patient Population and Common Diagnoses

Neurological cases including Traumatic Brain Injury, Spinal Cord Injury, Cerebrovascular Accident (CVA), and Aneurysm - primarily acute referrals from hospitals

Preferred experience in Medical-Surgical, Neurology units, or rehabilitation settings

Patients may include post-craniotomy, CVA, brain hemorrhages, individuals with PEG tubes and tracheostomies (mostly capped; occasional trach collar to oxygen managed by respiratory therapy)

Care involves use of braces, splints, and addressing mobility impairments

Patient Ratios

RN/LPN to patient ratio: 1 to 5-7

CNA staffing: 1-3 per shift

Licenses and Certifications Required

Active RN license valid in the state of practice

BLS and NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certifications

Required Skills and Competencies

• Experience caring for the patient types described above
• Proficiency in wound care, including dressing changes, wound vacs, and drain management
• Peripheral IV insertion and maintenance
• Ostomy care, administration of IV antibiotics, PEG tube maintenance, and tube feeding
• Established tracheostomy care and maintenance with 24/7 respiratory therapy support
• Management of braces and splints
• Knowledge of bowel and bladder care programs
• No administration of intravenous drips required

Support Services Available

• CNA assistance with vital signs, glucose monitoring, bathing, feeding, ambulation, patient turning, hourly rounding, and transport (hospital has a dedicated transport team)
• On-site unit secretary

• Phlebotomy and nurse-performed blood draws
• Respiratory therapy available around the clock
• Hospitalist coverage during daytime hours and on-call at night

• Unit-specific equipment includes VS3 vital sign monitors, Nova Glucose Stat Strips, portable vital sign monitors (Dynamapp), bladder scanners, IV pumps, portable oxygen systems, and suction machines

Floating Assignments

Floating occurs between Unit 1 and Unit 2.

Orientation and Scheduling

• One day of orientation combined with educational modules
• Two days of departmental orientation
• Weekend rotation includes 5-6 weekend shifts every 12 shifts on a 6-week schedule
• No on-call responsibilities
• Holiday work expectations include one shift during major holidays (Thanksgiving or the day after, December 24 or 25, December 31 or January 1)
• Time off requests require manager approval
• Shift hours: 07:00-19:00 and 19:00-07:00
• Schedule cycles every 6 weeks
