Job summary

R1 RCM, Inc. seeks a Clinical Documentation Improvement (CDI) Specialist to review inpatient records and improve documentation quality, accuracy, and coding. You will work with physicians to obtain clear documentation, ensure proper severity and complexity, and support CMS regulatory requirements.

You will lead physician queries, educate staff, and collaborate with coders to optimize DRG assignments and reimbursement while staying current with coding changes and quality initiatives.

Qualifications

• Associate’s Degree in Nursing (Bachelor’s preferred).
• Active US RN license required.
• Front-line CDI experience in an acute care hospital.
• Three to five years of recent clinical work in medical-surgical, ICU, telemetry, or emergency department.
• Knowledge of EMR and CDI platforms.

Responsibilities

• Initiates physician interaction through queries or rounding to obtain documentation for correct coding and compliance.
• Educates physicians and staff on documentation requirements and reimbursement policies.
• Uses hospital coding sets and guidelines to assign DRGs with high specificity.
• Collaborates with coders, auditors, and quality teams to resolve documentation issues.
• Stays updated on clinical documentation standards, coding rules, and regulatory requirements.
• Mortality and PSI reviews, plus other projects identified by CDI leadership.
