Job summary

R1 RCM Inc. is seeking a Clinical Documentation Improvement (CDI) Specialist to perform concurrent and retrospective reviews of inpatient records, improving documentation quality for accurate coding and reimbursement.

You’ll drive physician engagement and education to support appropriate severity of illness and hospital resource use. The role requires an active US RN license, front-line CDI experience in acute care, and strong EMR/CDI platform familiarity.

Qualifications

• Experience in clinical documentation improvement and coding for quality outcomes.
• Front line CDI experience in an acute care hospital.
• Active US RN license required; strong ICU/telemetry/ED exposure preferred.
• Knowledge of EMR platforms and CDI-specific software used for documentation and coding.

Responsibilities

• Initiates physician interaction to obtain missing or conflicting documentation via queries or rounding.
• Educates physicians and staff on documentation requirements, coding guidelines, and reimbursement policies.
• Applies coding rules and DRG assignment with attention to severity of illness and resource use.
• Collaborates with coders, auditors, and quality teams to resolve documentation issues and improve accuracy.
• Stays updated on clinical documentation standards and regulatory changes.
