Job summary

R1 RCM Inc. seeks a Clinical Documentation Improvement (CDI) Specialist to perform concurrent and retrospective reviews of inpatient records, using clinical and coding knowledge to improve documentation quality and billing accuracy in an acute care setting.

Active RN license required; front-line CDI experience essential. The role focuses on physician queries, staff education, and collaboration with coders and quality teams to support accurate reflection of CMI and LOS.

Qualifications

• CDI Knowledge for quality outcomes and reimbursement, CMS rule updates.
• Front-line CDI experience in an acute care hospital.
• Active US RN license required; experience in ICU/telemetry/ED is a plus.

Responsibilities

• Initiate physician queries for missing/ambiguous data to ensure accurate coding and LOS reflection.
• Educate physicians and staff on documentation requirements and reimbursement policies.
• Apply coding guidelines to assign DRGs with high specificity.
• Collaborate with coders, auditors, and quality teams to improve coding accuracy.
• Stay current on clinical documentation standards and regulatory changes.
• Conduct focused reviews (Mortality, PSI, etc.) identified by CDI leadership.
