We are currently looking for a Risk Managerto join our Legalteam located at our office in St. Louis, MO. Our ideal candidate for a Risk Manager is someone who has 7+ years of experience and will serve as a key member of the Company’s Legal and Risk organization, responsible for managing and advancing the Company’s insurance, surety, claims, and risk-financing programs. This is a senior, highly experienced, hands‑on role requiring deep, demonstrated knowledge of the construction industry, commercial insurance, surety, claims management, and construction‑related risk.
The Risk Manager is expected to independently manage routine and recurring matters, make recommendations on complex matters, and promptly
Settlement authority and other financial or strategic authority may be delegated by the Chief Legal Officer based on experience and demonstrated judgment.
Manage the Company’s enterprise insurance program across general liability, excess liability, workers’ compensation, automobile, property, inland marine, professional, pollution cyber, executive risk and other applicable lines of coverage.
Evaluate and recommend appropriate limits, retentions, deductibles/SIRs, coverage terms, and risk‑transfer strategies; lead preparation for annual insurance renewals, including underwriting submissions and negotiations.
Monitor insurance costs, collateral requirements, loss funds, deductibles and overall program performance.
Evaluate alternative risk solutions including large deductibles, captives and other loss sensitive options
Serve as the Company’s day‑to‑day working contact with its surety partners and broker, leading preparation of underwriting submissions and bond documentation, and coordinating with the Chief Legal Officer on relationship and capacity matters.
Manage the bonding program (bid, performance, payment, and other project‑related bonds), including reviewing bond forms and terms, coordinating issuance timelines with Operations and Project Management, and monitoring bonding capacity against the Company’s growth pipeline.
Own day‑to‑day strategy and oversight for the Company’s insured claims (workers’ compensation, automobile, general liability, property), coordinating with brokers, carriers, and third‑party administrators on claims handling and reserve adequacy.
Directly manage significant or contested claims, including reserve strategy and settlement authority as delegated by the Chief Legal Officer, escalating high‑exposure matters requiring executive or legal judgment.
Serve as the Company’s internal subject‑matter expert on construction insurance and risk, advising on project‑specific insurance and bonding requirements, additional insured status, waivers of subrogation, and other project‑level risk‑transfer terms.
Advise on prime contracts, subcontracts, purchase orders, and lease agreements from the risk management perspective
Partner on subcontractor risk matters, including subcontractor insurance requirements, Subcontractor Default Insurance (SDI), and financial capacity review.
Establish and maintain processes for insurance compliance across projects, vendors, and other counterparties, including escalation protocols for material issues.
Partner with the Company’s analytics team to define and interpret key risk metrics (loss trends, claims frequency and severity, experience modification factors) and translate them into data‑driven recommendations for reducing total cost of risk.
Act as a trusted advisor to enterprise leadership on insurance, surety, claims, and construction risk matters, and support the Chief Legal Officer in evaluating the Company’s overall risk profile for executive management and the Board.
7+ years of progressively responsible experience in risk management, insurance, surety, or claims, with substantial, hands‑on experience in the construction industry.
Significant experience managing insurance programs for a construction company, specialty contractor, general contractor, or similarly complex construction enterprise strongly preferred.
Deep understanding of construction insurance, surety, claims, contractual risk transfer, and construction project risk.
Demonstrated experience working directly with insurance brokers, carriers, sureties, and third‑party administrators.
Experience with large‑deductible or self‑insured retention programs strongly preferred.
Strong understanding of bonding programs, surety underwriting, and indemnity arrangements.
Highly organized, proactive, and accountable, with exceptional follow‑through.
