Job summary

Green Acres Baptist Church in Tyler, TX seeks a Retreat Center Assistant Director to maintain the Retreat Center’s facilities and grounds, ensuring safety, cleanliness, and welcoming spaces for guests and staff. You will oversee repairs, grounds care, and basic maintenance while supporting events and emergency readiness.

The role requires outdoor work, equipment operation, and collaboration with the Recreation Ministry to transform lives through service and care for the property and guests.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Experience in facility maintenance or groundskeeping preferred.
• Valid Texas driver’s license preferred.

Responsibilities

• Perform general maintenance and repairs on buildings, cabins, meeting spaces, and recreational facilities.
• Complete preventative maintenance to ensure facilities remain safe, functional, and well-maintained.
• Maintain the Retreat Center grounds, including mowing, trimming, pruning, weed control, and seasonal landscaping.
• Maintain walking trails, parking areas, athletic fields, playgrounds, and outdoor spaces.
• Assist with plumbing, electrical, carpentry, painting, HVAC, and other minor repairs.
• Remove debris and identify safety hazards; operate and maintain equipment safely.
• Assist with facility setup and breakdown for retreats, conferences, and events.
• Maintain clean, safe, functional, welcoming facilities and grounds; follow center policies.

The Retreat Center Assistant Director serves within the Recreation Ministry of Green Acres Baptist Church with the primary goal of Transforming Lives with the Truth of Jesus Christ. This position is responsible for maintaining the appearance, safety, and functionality of the Green Acres Retreat Center through facility maintenance, grounds care, equipment upkeep, and event support while providing a welcoming environment for guests, staff, and volunteers.

This position is responsible for maintaining the appearance, safety, and functionality of the Green Acres Retreat Center through facility maintenance, grounds care, equipment upkeep, and event support while providing a welcoming environment for guests, staff, and volunteers.

Supervisory Responsibilities

• None.

Duties/Responsibilities

• Perform general maintenance and repairs on buildings, cabins, meeting spaces, and recreational facilities.
• Complete preventative maintenance to ensure facilities remain safe, functional, and well‑maintained.
• Maintain the overall appearance of the Retreat Center grounds, including mowing, trimming, pruning, weed control, and seasonal landscaping.
• Maintain walking trails, parking areas, athletic fields, playgrounds, and outdoor gathering spaces.
• Assist with plumbing, electrical, carpentry, painting, HVAC, and other minor repairs as needed.
• Remove debris and identify potential safety hazards.
• Operate, maintain, and clean maintenance equipment, power tools, utility vehicles, tractors, and lawn equipment safely and responsibly.
• Ensure equipment receives routine service and timely repairs.
• Assist with facility setup and breakdown for retreats, conferences, and special events.
• Ensure facilities and grounds remain clean, safe, functional, and welcoming at all times.
• Follow all Retreat Center policies and operating procedures.
• Assist during severe weather preparation and emergency response efforts as needed.
• Maintain clear communication regarding maintenance needs, project progress, and facility concerns.

Required Skills/Abilities

• Enjoys working outdoors and in a camp or retreat‑style environment.
• Working knowledge of general building maintenance, groundskeeping, and equipment operation.
• Basic understanding of plumbing, electrical, carpentry, painting, HVAC systems, and general repair techniques.
• Ability to safely operate lawn equipment, power tools, tractors, utility vehicles, and other maintenance equipment.
• Strong organizational and problem‑solving skills.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to maintaining high standards.
• Demonstrates a positive attitude and excellent customer service.

Education and Experience

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Previous experience in facility maintenance, groundskeeping, landscaping, construction, or a related field preferred.
• Experience operating commercial landscaping or maintenance equipment is preferred.
• Valid Texas driver's license preferred.

Physical Requirements

• Must be able to manage multiple tasks simultaneously while maintaining attention to detail.
• Must be able to lift and carry loads of up to 75 pounds.
• Must be able to stand, walk, bend, kneel, climb ladders, and work on uneven terrain for extended periods.
• Must be able to work outdoors in varying weather conditions throughout the year.
• Ability to perform manual labor and safely operate machinery, hand tools, and power tools.
• Schedule flexibility. Holiday weekends of Memorial Day, Independence Day, and Labor Day are required workdays.
