General Summary

The Buyer-in-Training (BIT) position is the entry-level role into CarMax’s Merchandising department. Under supervision, BITs are responsible for managing CarMax’s used car inventory through customer appraisals, appraisal offers, coordinating on-site Wholesale Auctions, and attending regional auctions. The training lasts approximately 4-6 months, covering vehicle basics, market analytics, and offsite behaviors.

Principle Duties and Responsibilities

• Evaluate and negotiate market prices; assess vehicle damage and costs; make sound purchasing and pricing decisions based on customer assessments, offers, and auctions.
• Conduct vehicle appraisals, coordinate and attend auctions.
• Accurately assess vehicle condition, record and communicate information.
• Provide excellent customer service and collaborate with other departments for a memorable customer experience.
• Support new store procedures, processes, and technology platforms.
• Use technology for effective team collaboration.
• Execute initiatives like Offer Role and Offsite processes.
• Complete the Buyer-in-Training program successfully.
