General Summary

The Buyer-in-Training (BIT) position is the entry-level role into CarMax’s Merchandising department. Under supervision, BITs are responsible for acquiring and managing CarMax’s used car inventory through customer appraisals, appraisal offers, coordinating on-site Wholesale Auctions, and attending regional auctions. The program lasts approximately 4-6 months and includes comprehensive training on vehicle basics, market analytics, and offsite behaviors.

Principle Duties And Responsibilities

• Evaluate and negotiate market prices, assess vehicle damage and costs, and make sound purchasing decisions via customer assessments, offsite auctions, or online venues.
• Conduct vehicle appraisals, coordinate and attend wholesale and regional auctions.
• Accurately assess vehicle condition, record and communicate information.
• Deliver excellent customer service and collaborate across departments to enhance customer experience.
• Support new store procedures, processes, and technology platforms.
• Utilize technology for effective team collaboration.
• Complete the Buyer-in-Training program successfully.

Qualifications

Must be able to:

• Make independent judgments on vehicle purchases and pricing.
• Communicate effectively with internal and external customers.
• Analyze market data and complete paperwork accurately.
• Demonstrate successful goal setting, career planning, and execution.
• Adapt to change in a team environment.
• Multi-task in a fast-paced environment.
• Hold a valid Driver’s License.

Requirements

• Work in indoor/outdoor environments, standing or walking for long periods, in all weather conditions.
• Flexible work hours including nights, weekends, holidays, and travel.
• Maintain professional appearance per company standards.
• Adhere to all company policies and procedures.
• Primarily outdoor work, sometimes in noisy or inclement weather.
